6,
Materials Recovered: None, except as noted above.
• Remarks: No further work is recommended. The site is possibly(?)
Ute Indian, but the lack of definite diagnostic pictographs and/or art-
ifactural materials precludes any definite cultural affiliation identification.
One additional site, also brought to our attention by Dennis Weder,
is cited here as it might be endangered as a result of industrial activities
in the area, or if exposed to an influx of persons brought into the area
for the variety of reasons associated xith construction or alteration of
the W illiams Fork/Yampa River confluence locality.
Site st~'289, Petroglyph/Pictograph panel.
Location: T6N, R91W, SWS Section jl, Moffat County (U.S.G.S. Round
Bottom Quadrangle), ,lust above floodplain of Williams Fork River.
Site Description: Site consists of both isolated petrogl}~hs and
• `pictograph groupings, extending for one-quarter mile alongside the road
to the Silengo Coal Nsne. Pictographs are made with red paint (hematite?);
petroglyphs combine techniques of pecking and incising. Main themes are
riders with shields, headdresses, and bows/arrows, and animals such as
deer, buffalo, and mountain sheep (see site sketch ,and photograph). The
site is at an elevation of about 6160 feet; there is no depth of deposit.
Materials R=covered: The rock art is the on]y evidence of human
activity.
Remarks: The rock art is representative of Post-Hispanic contact and
is undoubtedly the work of Ute Indians who are known to have been living
in the area. A similar rock art site attributed to the Ute Indians (5F~281),
which is situated at the confluence of the Yampa and Williams Fork Rivers,
was denoted in an earlier report to Stearns-Roger.
. If futpre activities connected with power generating threaten this site,
measures should be taken to protect the fragile, and interesting, rock art.
