• for these pillars will be significantly greater than
1.9) As mining continues in the Purgatoire River
alluvial valley, a maximum of 50% of the coal will be
extracted. Variances in pillar size will be dependent
on the configuration of the development entries, rooms,
and geologic factors associated with the Maxwell Seam.
The probable hydrologic consequences of subsidence are
discussed in Section 2.04.7 of the permit. No significant
deep aquifers are found above the Maxwell seam. The
alluvial aquifer was evaluated in the AVF study of
Santistevan canyon. It was determined to not be of
significance in this area.
Longwall mining as a Porn of controlled subsidence is
projected for other areas. Vertical displacements of up to
6.5 feet has been experienced from mining that has occurred
at the Golden Eagle mine. The worst possible consequences
of subsidence from mining to structures and renewable
resources within and adjacent to the permit area are:
1) The Raacho Sacondido Water line. The worst
possible consequence of subsidence would be damage to
the waterline throughout the entire projected zone of
• subsidence with interruption of water service.
The area experienced 4.5 feet of subsidence in 1991
from mining Northwest #1 Longwall panel, and an
additional 0.5 feet in 1993 from mining panel #2.
there has been no demonstrated damage nor diminution of
value.
2). Aquifers aad Wells. The worst possible
consequences of subsidence would he the temporary or
permanent loss of a domestic water supply.
There are no known beneficial wells or aquifers within
the area and there has been no demonstrated damage nor
diminution of value.
3). Roads and Culverts. The worst possible
consequence of subsidence would be subsidence to the
extent that the roads would be temporarily impassible
requiring backfilling of tension cracks and regrading
of subsided areas and/or replacement of damaged
culverts. There has been no demonstrated damage nor
diminution of value.
• 2.05-53
(Revised 05-18-94)
