Significant Wildlife Resources <br />The area within and nearby to the proposed permit area contains a wide <br />variety of wildlife species. Mammal species include: mule deer, jack- <br />rabbits, cottontail rabbits, red fox, coyotes, skunks, prairie dogs, and <br />various non-game mammals and rodents. Bird species include: eagles, hawks, <br />geese, pheasants, various waterfowl and shore birds, and various song and <br />non-game birds. Aquatic wildlife includes: carp, catfish, trout, minnows, <br />various warm water fish and various reptiles and amphibians. <br />B. Seasonal Use <br />The greatest concentration of mule deer, ducks, geese,a~d eagles oc- <br />curs from October through February of each year. This concentration occurs <br />when lakes begin to freeze over and waterfowl begin to look for open water <br />provided by rivers and warm water sloughs. <br />C. Threatened or Endangered Species <br />Bald eagles are known to exist in lJeld County and commonly utilize <br />tall .cottonwood trees for nesting. According to the Colorado Division of <br />Wildlife, only an occasional bald eagle may utilize the river area during <br />the migration periods, mainly late fall through early spring. <br />D. Effects on Wildlife <br />The mining operations would have various effects on wildlife popula- <br />tions. Normal activities would temporarily be disrupted for many species <br />1 <br />
