• The Cottonwood Creek intake structure is located in Section 19, T11S, R97W.
This structure is also screened and gavelled and conveys water to either
Palisade Cabin Reservoir or to the Cottonwood Creek pipeline via the Kruzen
Springs pipeline.
A structure known as the Egger Ditch is located in Section 8, T11S, R97W.
Upon investigation, it was determined that the structure is not a ditch but a
pipeline which conveys water from the "Goat Flats" area in Section 8 to the
Rapid Creek pipeline. This source of water has not been developed because of
a high concentration of dissolved salts which results in much poorer water
quality when compared to the other sources of water available.
Of all the structures mentioned, only the Cottonwood Creek and Rapid Creek
pipelines exist within the Powderhorn Coal Company permit area.
• Once the demand for raw water by the Town of Palisade is met, the excess
water is allowed to overflow from the reservoirs or the raw water storage facility.
This water, which can flow from malfunctioning reservoir gates, faulty shut-off
valves, or overflow releases, courses the historic channels of Cottonwood
Creek and Rapid Creek.
The confluence of Cottonwood and Rapid Creeks occurs in Section 1, T11S,
R98W. Approximately 800 feet downstream from the confluence, Powderhorn
Coal Company maintains and monitors a gauging station on Rapid Creek. The
flow records can be found in Table 7-4. From this point, Rapid Creek flows
approximately 1,000 feet where it intercepts raw water spillage from the Ute
Water Conservancy District treatment plant. It should be noted that quantity of
water being discharged from this facility is substantial and is more than the
quantity allotted for the irrigation diversions used by Rapid Creek water right
• holders. The Grapevine Ditch originates from this point of discharge. There
7-12 (New 3/1/96)
