• The Town of Palisade acquires its water from a complex network of structures
which include reservoirs, pipelines, intakes, springs, and one ditch high on the
northwest slope of the Grand Mesa. These structures convey water via
pipelines to the Town for use as domestic water. The Town of Palisade owns
property on these watersheds and has constructed and maintained locked
gates across the roads on federal and private lands to secure the areas against
trespassing.
Water from melting snow accounts for the majority of spring runoff in two major
drainage basins of Rapid Creek and Cottonwood Creeks. There are four (4)
reservoirs which supplement the waters that are located on the northwest flank
of the Grand Mesa. The reservoirs are: Rapid Creek No. 1, Rapid Creek No. 2,
Vincent Reservoir No. 1, and Vincent Reservoir No. 2, which are located more
precisely in Sections 22, 23, 26, 27, 28, 33, T11 S, and R97W. No flow data
are available for any of the Town of Palisade reservoirs. The reasons for this
• may be the overall complexity of the systems, the inaccessibility of the area,
and the flow release system for Rapid Creek Reservoirs Nos. 1 and 2. It
appears that there are two (2) outlet structures on Rapid Creek No. 1 which can
either allow water to course the Rapid Creek drainage or allow water to course
the Tate Creek drainage basin. Seeps from the reservoirs in the area also
contribute to the runoff which can either be stored in one of three (3) lower
reservoirs or conveyed directly into pipelines which can carry water directly to
the Palisade water supply reservoir in T11S, R98W, Section 2.
The lower reservoirs consist of Palisade Reservoir No. 3 (Section 21), Palisade
Reservoir No. 1 (Section 20), and Palisade Cabin Reservoir (Sections 18 and
19}. These reservoirs store the majority of the raw water for the Town of
Palisade.
• 7-10 (New 3/1/96)
