r V • •
Division of Minerals & Geology
September 17, 1997
Page 2
big hom sheep, and fish in the area. I was told by the Division of Wildlife a
couple of years ago that there are two pairs of nesting Bald Eagles in the Gorge.
I doubt they would continue to nest there with the commotion caused by the
mine.
Since the Parkdale area acts as a natural amphitheater, the noise from blasting
during the day, and the lights as well as the excessive noise caused by loading
boulders into rail cars during the night, is bound to be detrimental to wildlife and
an extreme aggravation to area landowners. The proposed mine will be located
on the Harvey Ranch, which is situated at the entrance to Big Hom Canyon -
named for the frequent sightings of Big Hom Sheep. Consider the impact on
them.
6.3.2 Exhibit B -Site Description
There are two old water wells close to the proposed site which are contaminated
by Cyanide (not an uncommon occurrence in this area). Should any damage
occur to these wells from blasting by Agile Stone Systems, the tragic result will
be pollution into Tallahassee Creek and the Arkansas River, endangering fish
and wildlife and quite possibly the thousands of rafters who vaption here every
year.
I have concerns about the pollution of groundwater and the Tallahassee,
particularly since Agile Stone Systems is proposing to ford Tallahassee Creek
with culverts instead of a bridge when they divert the railroad. I believe it is
possible that railroad residue could pollute the Tallahassee and the Arkansas
River during rain run off.
In addition, I have been told that there are Uranium deposits located close to the
site from an earlier mine/quarry near to this proposed site.
6.4 Geotechnical Exhibit
As stated before, a large portion of our property is primarily shale. I am asking
for a Certified Geological Survey to evaluate the geological stability of this area.
My concems are the affects of blasting on my water well, the spring it feeds from
and the foundation and structure of our custom log home.
