CRYSTAL PIT
Therefore, about 1 to 3 acres of each phase will be opened for
• extraction initially with the subsequent operations extending up the
valleys in small strips. The west phase will be completed with mining
before the east phase is initiated.
ACCESS ROADS: Access to each phase will be from a small dirt road
which leads from another dirt road to the highway. In this way, no
new entrances to the Pikes Peak Highway will be established, but
rather all existing roads will be used.
The existing roads to be used for access are adequate for the
equipment and no improvements will be needed other than an occasional
grading if the need arises. Thus the road will be maintained, but it
will not be improved and is therefore not included as affected land.
WATER REDUIREMENTS: Only minimal water will be needed for occasional
dust control. If such water is needed it will be acquired from local
sources owned by the City of Colorado Springs. The city has several
reservoirs on Pikes Peak and one is within a mile of the site. Water,
• if needed, could be derived from those sources.
GROUND WATER OCCURRENCES: No ground water will be encountered in the
course of this operation. The water that might be encountered will be
occasional accumulations of runoff from-rain or snow melt. This
runoff will be controlled on site (see reclamation plan for details).
MATERIAL PROCESSING: As stated before, it is expected that no
material processing will be needed at all. This is because the fine
gravels produced in the decomposition of the Pikes Peak Granite is
often of a grade which is suitable for direct placement on the Pikes
Peak Highway. This has been the experience in the past and there is
no reason to think it would be any different at this site.
On the other hand, if-processing is needed it would constitute
nothing more than a minimal amount of screening. That would either
be done on site or where the material is hauled.
u
1J
