CRYSTAL PIT
Therefore, the depth of mining will be from a foot or so near the
• edge of the permit to a maximum depth of about 5 to 6 feet where the
existing topography allows mining to such a depth (see Figures 1 and 2
for typical cross-sections of the valley and the mining section).
Because minimal processing (and preferably no processing) will be
done, encountering rocks larger than can be used will also limit the
depth of mining. If large rocks are encountered then, in most
instances, the mining depth would be reduced to the depth of the
finer, decomposed materials nearer the surface.
MAJOR COMPONENTS OF THE OPERATION: This operation will be very
simple and will have minimal equipment and facilities on site.
Basically it will consist of the usual heavy equipment including
trucks to haul the material, a front end loader to excavate, and
possibly a dozer to move larger amounts of material around.
Processing of the material will consist of nothing more than screening
and that may not even be needed as the material derived directly from
the deposit is usually of sufficient quality to be used directly on
• the road surface when combined with grading.
If screening is done, the fines derived from the screening will
be placed back on the ground and used in the reclamation of the site.
However, such screening is not expected to be needed.
DESCRIPTION OF DISTURBANCE AREAS: The mining of each phase will begin
near the entrance beside the access road shown on the mining plan maps
for each phase. The operation will then proceed up the respective
valleys with final grading being produced during the mining process
itself. Put in very simplistic terms, the operation will consist of
essentially scraping off the fine, decomposed granite, loading it in
trucks, and hauling it directly to the road where it will be placed
and graded. As stated before, little if any processing of the
material is expected to be needed.
The area to be operated at any one time will consist of about 1
to 3 acres, the exact size being determined by the current material
needs for highway maintenance. As each area is completed the
stripping and removal process will move on to the next area.
12
