•T ~^~ COMMERCIAL TE6TING d ENGINEERING CO.
%ABSTRACT
Results of past acute bioassays indicate that effluent discharged from outfall 001 is acutely toxic
to Ceriodaphnia dzrbia. The Bear Coal Company discharge permit states that the facility must
conduct either a Preliminary Toxicity Identi&cation evaluation (PTI) or a Toxicity Identification
Evaluation (TIE) once a "pattern of toxicity" has been established. Commercial Testing and
Engineering, Ca (CT&E) opted, with permission by Bear Coal Co., to conduct an acute
Preliminary Toxicity Identification (PTI) on effluent discharged by Bear Coal Company. The
purpose of this PTI was to determine the possible cause(s) of the acute toxicity to Ceriodaphnia
dzrbia. The test organism utilized was the cladoceran, Ceriodaphnia dubia. The results were
very conclusive. The evidence strongly suggests that the acute toxicity is due to total dissolved
solids (TDS) based on the results of the effluent manipulations.
a
Ir
F-s2s
1
