w ,..t:.~ . p . _ ~
_ i
Mr. Claude Deering F ~ B 23 1987
LaPlata County Courthouse
1060 E 2nd Ave h:~ivtt~ ~AP1C
Durango, Co. SI301 F~E''t_.~41AA7!ON DIVISION FEB 1 1 1987
Dear Commissioner;
The following are some facts which I would appreciate your ~
consideration, concerning the current application by John D 1
for not one but two sand and gravel pits to be located on t e
Animas River north of Durango.
First of all both of the state permits applied for by Mr. Dillon
are Limited Impact operation 110 type. This particular per it,
if issued by the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division, ermits
disturbance of up to 9.9 surface acres and removal of up to
70,000 tons of material per year.
Mr. Dillon has proposed to limit the Willow Bend permit to~5,000
cubic yards per year and disturbance of only six acres of
area.
Mr. Dillon also speaks of hauling only five truck loads p
maximum.
However, if you will look at the attached page 4 of a sta
prepared by Mr. Butch Knowlton you will notice it states
trips "averaged" per day which certainly has a different
rface
day
report
e truck
ning to
Mr. Dillons statement. Further if you will read item 12 0~ Mr.
Dillons state application you will note there is no mentio~ of
truck trip limit.
Mr. Dillon states in Exhibit C-1 that the mining will be c~ntinued
"indefinitely".
Item C-2 states no grassland will be disturbed and no recl oration
will be necessary because mining will be conducted on the xisting
sand bar. However, upon measuring and computing the surfs a area of
the sand bar I found it to be 26,750 square feet or approx'mately
six-tenths of an acre. The mine permit asks for six acres which
will necessarily include 5.4 acres of grassland. ~
1
