• P~ 7
June 18, 1985
Daniel's Pit 2
C. Farrell
RESPONSE: As stated in the amendment, mining on the west side of
Academy is very limited. Previous mining has occurred along the north
side (south side of the dike separating this pit from Castle Concrete's
Sand Pit). A small amount has also occurred in Phase IIw.
The acreage previously mined in Iw cannot be precisely determined,
but we can estimate it to be about 5 to 7 acres. Keep in mind that
much of this mining was in fact pre-law and that the area in this phase
is primarily included not because of its past history of mining, but
rather its being affected land by virtue of its being a processing area.
No land in this area has actually been reclaimed as it is all
needed for use. Some areas are in a quasi-reclaimed state, but under
this plan this land would be redisturbed for future processing as well
as to allow it to fit into the overall reclamation scheme for this area.
No land in Phase Iw will be mined in the future under this plan.
All of the acreage contained in the phase is affected land.
Item 2 - Will overburden be stockpiled for later use in reclamation?
RESPONSE: This is an excellent and very perceptive question. In
the actual process of stockpiling topsoil, there is a separation of what
is considered topsoil from the "dirty sand" below the topsoil. In some
areas the quantity of dirty sand is rather great extending to a depth of
about 3 to 4 feet below the soil. In other places, this material is
virtually absent.
This "dirty sand" does have market value as a fill material,
however processing it through the plant is generally not done because it
tends to produce a rather dirty product that customers do not like for
some applications. Therefore, much of the dirty sand is sold as is for
fill material. There usually is some left over and this can and, where
possible, will be used as partial backfill for reclamation. We do wish
to emphasize however, that the dirty sand under the soil exhibits very
different properties as compared to the soil. It might be possible to
use as a growth medium, but it generally does not exhibit very favorable
characteristics, being only a little better than the sand deposit
itself. But generally the material is marketed for fill.
Item 3a - What are the proposed final grade(s) of the slopes around
the highway?
RESPONSE: As stated in the plan, these slopes will generally be
rather short extending from the top of a 12 foot berm. In most cases
these slopes will be about 2.5:1 to 3:1. In some areas where the
powerline limits the feasibility of greatly reducing the highway slopes,
the slope will remain as is below the level of the base of the power
poles. These current slopes are between 2:1 and 3:1, but generally
about 2.25:1.
