z
June 18, 1985
Daniel's Pit 2
C. Farrell
Grazing was also considered. There is some agricultural land in
the rather large backyards of homes along Bradley Road, but it seemed to
be somewhat discordant to designate an alternative land use as grazing
with residential areas just to the north and industrial areas rapidly
surrounding the site on other sides. Also, no cattle have been placed
on this land for ages, even though in its current vegetative condition
it would make some rather good grazing land for horses or cattle.
We also considered open space and parklands, but these seemed to
carry an undesirable connotation that Daniel's Sand Company was going to
create a 200 acre recreational park for the general public. Such an
alternative would probably alay the fears of some possible objectors,
but it wouldn't be very honest either.
We chose "revegetation" because it seemed to carry a connotation
that something was going to be done to revegetate the land, but any
actual land uses of that revegetated land would be, so to speak, up for
grabs. If somebody wanted to put horses on the site they could or they
could build a park or develop the site, but with revegetated land at
least erosion would be controlled and the potential uses most flexible.
If an alternative other than "revegetation" is absolutely
necessary, then we would select grazing. The species to be planted are
suitable for that purpose. However, we do feel that in some cases, this
being one of them, "revegetation" can be a land use in that it provides
the greatest flexibility in situations where surronding land uses are
rapidly changing. If the operation was 20 miles east of Colorado
Springs, revegetation would not be a land use, but in this case we can
find no other term that accurately and honestly reflects the actual
circumstances.
Exhibit C - Pre Mining and Mining Plan Map
Item 1 - Please provide the acreage of those mining phases located
West of Academy Boulevard.
RESPONSE: Please keep in mind that the phasing on the west side of
Academy is a rather arbitrary matter. These phases actually merge
extensively with respect to their uses and features. In comparison to
the phases on the east side of Academy, which tend to be more natural
with respect to operational features, these phases are very vague.
The acreage breakdown in these phases is as follows:
/ PHASE ACREAGE
Iw 42
IIw 16
IIIw 10
IVw 31
