The DMG should require Haldorson and Sons, Inc. to reclaim the
land as cropland to a depth of not more that 10 feet below the
present level of the land or two feet above the highest ground water
recorded on the property during the hydrologic testing period,
whichever is higher.
I would further request that the DMG require the applicant to make
public the test results on which he is basing his claims of gravel
deposits, overburden, topsoil and no ground water. I might point out
that the public has never had an opportunity to review these test
results.
Could you also require the applicant, not the taxpayers, before
mining begins, pay for studies to establish baseline information on
water quality and air quality that would support adequate
enforcement of water and air quality standards during the life of the
mine.
I might also point out that the mine site is in an area that is quickly
changing from agricultural to residential. There are 3 schools and 2
churches and over 600 residences within 1 mile of the proposed
mine. The industrial noise standards that normally apply to a mine
are inappropriate for this populated area.
In addition, serious health hazards from dust, particulate matter and
fumes especially during the spring and summer months when high
winds are frequent will be likely. There are more than 200 children
living in a mobile home park less than a mile downwind from the
proposed mine.
The amended mining application, which states that the land will be
reclaimed as cropland, is woefully inadequate. A pit 5000+ feet long,
1000+ feet wide and 40 feet deep where there is a high water table
does not constitute viable cropland.
I sincerely thank you for your attention to the above outlined items. This
permit is NOT in the best interests of the residents of the area or Montrose
County. Please consider carefully before you grant this permit.
R~ctfully,
c~r~n~ ~~~~vc~
Suza nf5 a E. Teague
61352 Monroe Road
Montrose, CO 89401-8073
970/249-5304
