Larry Larson and Ron Naten
Re: Kerr North Expansion
April 30, 1980
With respect to herbaceous plants, cover by spe-
cies will be determined by a 10-point frame placed randomly
along the previously described 50 meter transacts. Shrub
cover will be determined from the 50 meter transacts using
the line intercept method.
Plant production, given in oven dried weights,
will be determined from five one-quarter square meter plot
frames placed randomly along the 50 meter transact.
With respect to shrubs, average height will be
determined by measuring each shrub that intersects the 50
meter transact. Shrub density will be determined by using a
one square meter quadrat.
KCC indicated that during late May and much of the
month of June the permit area would be grazed under a BLM
grazing permit. It was specifically understood that base-
. line sampling could be conducted subsequent to this grazing
period.
C. Measuring Success of Revegetation: KCC will assume
that revegetation is successful when the weighted cover and
production on the revegetated site is equal to or greater
than the weighted cover and production from relevant reference
areas. If the revegetation value is less than the reference
area value, a T-Test will be used to determine if there is
a statistically significant difference. In this connection,
and with respect to pre-mining baseline sampling, major plant
species will be weighed separately, less frequent species
will be combined and weighed together by life form, e.g.,
shrubs, grasses and forbs.
A weighted Shannon-Weaver Index will also be
calculated from the cover data collected in the 1980 field
season. Finally, KCC will determine sampling adequacy using
the statistical formula employed by BLM in their SVIM Program.
D. Tipple Site Vegetation Baseline Data: KCC will
not identify a specific reference area at the tipple site
as a consequence of the fact that the area has already been
completely disturbed. KCC will conform with the applicable
r
