December 1986 11 863-2060
•
4.4.1 Area 1 Instabilit
Based on an August 9, 1984 correspondence from CYCC to the MLRD,
minor slumping had occurred in a portion of Area 1 each spring
since the area was reclaimed in 1981 (CYCC, 1984). Additionally,
Area 1 instability was recently described in a November 14, 1986
correspondence to the MLRD (YVCC, 1986).
Three relatively small slumps located near the mine spoil toe
northwest of Middle Creek are described in these documents.
Slumps A and B are reported to comprise areas of 0.32 acres and
0.14 acres, respectively. As reported in the 1984 correspon-
den~e, displacements of 2 to 4 feet and average head scarps of 2
feet were measured. The ground surface near the head of slumps A
and B slopes at a gradient of approximately 35 percent (19 de-
grees). Slump A occurred in regraded mine spoil, while slump B
• occurred in weathered shale in an area that was never mined. The
limits of slump C are obscure and have not been delineated.
A total of six springs/seeps have been identified in the immedi-
ate vicinity of these slumps. Although no ground-water discharge
was observed in this portion of Area 1 during the December 1986
field investigation, cattails were noted adjacent to each slump.
Based on December 1986 observations, slumps A and B appear to be
surficial failures which are very limited in their vertical and
lateral extent.
•
Golder Associates
