HB_1561 continued_paae 4
The National Society decided that that jail was
a national museum piece. Uh, nobody down there has any
pleasant memories about this jail. It sure as heck
isn't anything to look at, it's a sore thumb standing
right in the way of where we want to really do some
beautification of our..of our down-trodden area in the
City of Colorado Springs, and this is just gonna give one
more chunk of power to these type of people that have
done this without ever coming to look at the jail."
McCroskey: "Was that the state Historical Society?"
Hershberger: "National."
MCroskey: "Oh, well that's... of course, this bill simply has set..
the only power it gives to the state Historical
Society...it can delay action by state agencies for
ninety days. It can't, uh..it doesn't give it any power
what-so-ever over the actions of local government."
Chairman: "Representative Hershberger."
Hershberger: "Yes, if the National has this much power that they can
completely stop us when the planning and architectural
work and everything is done...and we have nowhere out, if
we tear it down we're at an injunction, then, why do
we need any other powers?"
Chairman: "Representative McCroskey."
McCroskey: "This, once again, is the..is a state agency which,
I would hope and suspect, would be more concerned with
matters of..of...state interest and of ah..of local matters,
more-so I think, than the National Registry would. It won't
.it doesn't give them any power over the actions of local
government."
Hershberger: "It just seems that there's so much power there now,
I hate to see more added. Thank you"
