Ms. Susan Burgmaier
August 31, 1995
Page 3
however, several rain showers had occurred during the
previous week.
O. May 27, 1992: The annual embankment inspection was
conducted. Skies were cloudy and temperatures in the
60's° F. The mine was wet and muddy at the time of
inspection; it had rained that day and numerous rain
showers had occurred during the previous week.
P. June 10, 1993: The annual embankment inspection was
conducted. Skies were clear and the temperature was in
the 70's° F. Prior to today, afternoon showers had become
commonplace for several days. The mine was relatively
dry.
Q. June 8, 1994: The annual embankment inspection was
conducted. Skies were clear and the temperature was in
the low 70's° F. Recent dry weather had dried out most of
the mine site ephemeral drainages, including this one.
R. June 28, 1995: The annual embankment inspection was
conducted. Skies were partly cloudy and the temperature
was in the 70's° F. The mine was relatively dry at the
time of inspection, and no rain had fallen in over 10
days.
II. Inspection (06/28/95)
A. Crest of Embankment
The crest of the embankment is a 60-foot wide roadway
used for coal haulage. No signs of stress (cracks) were
noticed during the inspection of the crest. The roadway
and side ditches are well maintained. Safety berms are in
place. The side ditches are clean and traverse the entire
length of the embankment with no openings for discharge
onto embankment slopes.
B. Upstream Embankment Slope
Vegetation again appears to have a higher cover on this
slope than the downstream slope and erosion does not
appear to be a problem. No cracking was noted on the
slope. Only minimal impounding had occurred over the past
year as evidenced by the lack of debris or high water
lines on the fill slope. The steel stakes set to indicate
the 10-year, 24-hour storm water elevation are in place
and in good condition.
