f • PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION
The Bowie No. 2 Mine surface facilities will serve an underground room and pillar mine
with an estimated service life of at least 35 years. The mine portal will be uphill of most of the
planned improvements at an elevation of about 6,900 feet, while the base facilities for coal
loading will be at an elevation of about 6,000 feet. Plate 1 shows the planned facilities and their
relationship to the boreholes made for this study.
Construction of the haul road and portal bench is currently planned to initiate by
September 1, 1996. Construction of underground workings, surface facilities and the conveyor
will then commence over the winter of 1996-1997. Starting from the base area, major features
include:
• Approximately 10,000 lineal feet of access and haulage road at an average grade
of about 10 percent, with numerous culverts and sidehill cuts/fills. The haul road
is presumed to be designed for heavy thick traffic typical of mining facilities, and
as such, would be paved with a section of materials to support such loading. The
haul road may be re-routed across a rock slope. Tltis route modification was not
studied for this report.
• A graded truck loadout area will be at about elevation 6,000 feet, requiring
about 5 to 10 feet of cut and fill greding will be located at the base of the
conveyor with a 56-foot diameter, 170-foot tall silo and smaller stoker bin. The
silos will likely be constructed on mat/footing foundations. Sedimentation Pond
B will be cut about 10 to 20 feet deep,. located on a bench southwest of the
loadout area.
• Topsoil Pile No. 1 will be located east of the truck loadout area. An extension
of the haul road will run between the loadout area and the gob pile, located on
a steep slope above the old surface facilities for a previous mining operation. A
small gob pile pond will control runoff from the gob pile. Pond C will be
excavated into a bench to the west of the gob pile. Materials and topsoil storage
are planned along the lower reaches of the haul road extension.
I,' •
i ~--
2
