i
._~
PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF STUDY
This report presents the results of a preliminary geotechnical engineering study to
determine the general subsurface conditions for the proposed surface facilities at the proposed
Bowie No. 2 Mine, located in Sections 10 (SWl/4) and 15 (N1/2), Township 13 South, Range
91 West of the 6th Principal Meridian, Delta County, Colorado. The study was prepared in
accordance with our proposal, dated May 21, 1996. The project site is shown on Fig. 1. The
study was conducted for the purpose of evaluating geotechnically-related issues pertaining to site
development and to provide recommendations for design and construction.
A field exploration program consisting of 23 exploratory borings was conducted to obtain
information on subsurface conditions. Samples of the soil and rock obtained during the field
exploration were tested in the laboratory to determine physical and engineering characteristics.
Results of the field exploration and laboratory testing were analyzed to develop the
recommendations contained herein. This report has been prepared to summarize the data
obtained during this study and to present our conclusions and recommendations based on the
proposed construction and the subsurface conditions encountered. Design parameters and a
discussion of geotechnical engineering considerations related to planning and development are
included in the report.

1
