~~
12. Valent-Wigton area
Deep, nearly level to hilly, excessively drained, sandy soils formed
in sandy eolian material.
This soil area is in the south central and southeastern part of the
survey area. It occupies about 7 percent of the total acreage. About
60 percent of the area is the Valent soil, 15 percent Wigton soil, and
the remaining 25 percent in soils of minor extent.
The Valent soil has sand surface layers and underlying layers. The
Wigton soil has a loamy sand surface layer and underlying layers grading
from loamy sand to sand.
The minor soils in this area are the well drained Ascalon, Bi3ou,
C Olney and Vona soils.
Almost all of this soil area is used for livestock grazing. These
soils are unsuited for dryland farming because of the sandy textures and
limited precipitation. A few small areas have developed sprinkler
irrigation.
The potential for homesites is good. The limiting soil feature is
the sandy texture and erosion hazard. The potential for wildlife
habitat is fair.
33
ti
