Y
• Mr. Scott Jones - 2 - March 10, 1986
ri
After review of°the documentation available on Well No. 1, it seems that there _
is considerable discrepancy in the records concerning the completion success -
and techniques used. Communication with Mr. Scott Jones at the mine, and
results of slug testing lead to the conclusion that the well is open
throughout the Mesaverde and into the Mancos strata. Therefore, the well may
be monitoring all the ground water of the entire coal section in the vicinity
of the mine. Due to the well's proximity to Mine No. 2 it is possible that
water from this mine may be entering this well. Therefore, the Division
requires the following.
The operator should assemble accurate records and survey information on
the old workings of Mine No. 2 and determine the position of Hole No.
M-1 both vertically and horizontally in reference to the old workings
and submit a report detailing the likelihood or lack of that We11 M-1
is in hydrologic contact with Mine No. 2.
Ground Water Levels
Observations of water levels for the reporting year, 1985, indicate no
significant changes over previous years water levels.
Mine Discharge and Water Quality
• Discharge rates for Mine No. 1 have remained almost the same as those of the
previous reporting year at 291.5 acre feet (previous year = 290.4 acre feet).
Discharge rates for Mine No. 3 were not available or directly estimable from
the data submitted.
Water quality data for the reporting year 1985 for Mine No. l indicate a
slight rise in TDS of about 8% over the previous reporting year. This rise is
not considered significant. Water quality data for the reporting year 1985
for Mine No. 3 indicates TDS levels remained near the same as those of the
previous reporting year (1985 TDS = 1098 mg/1 vs. 1984 TDS = 1100mg/1 ).
Please respond to the numbered comments no later than March 30, 1986. Your
response should be formatted so as to allow the revision to be directly
inserted into the annual report. If there are any questions or if
clarification is needed, please do not hesitate to contact this office,
Sincerely,
/r ~
j ~ . ice; ~- s~
Candace M.
