Box 980 Carbondale, Colorado 81623 Re: Review of Annual Hydrologic Report for Water Year 1985, North Thompson Creek Mines -file No. C-81-025 Dear Mr. Jones: Mr. Dale Plume and I have reviewed the above-referenced report, The report is well organized, concise, and contains most informational requirements. Presented below is a brief discussion organized according to the format of the report. Any comments requiring a response from the operator are numbered. Surface Water Quality • 1. As you discussed with Candace Thompson on February 20, 1986, the last quarter sampling of 1985 was not included in the Hydrologic Report. This data needs to be included in the report. 2. The Division understands that sulfate analysis was left off the laboratory request list for the middle two quarters of 1985. Snowmass Coal needs to contact the Taboratory and ensure that sulfate analysis is included on all quarterly analyses for the future. For yourinformation, analysis of the discharge from the peat bog treatment gave the following results in the summer of 1985. TDS 4400 mg/1 Mg 390 mg/1 Ca as Ca Cog 1390 mg/1 SOq 3380 mg/1 These elevated levels correspond to the unusually high levels of these parameters in the August 8, 1985 analysis of the North Thompson Creek downstream site. Ground Water Quality No significant water quality trends are noted for the ground water monitoring wells, however, data that indicates sharp fluctuations in water quality and water levels are still evident in Hole No. M-1.
