Letter of Objection d Conc~ITi "Line Camp Gravel Pit" (Application #: M-2001)
Thursday, March 01, 2001 -Page: 9
existed as a haven for them as long as residents of the valley can
remember.
If the Linecamp site were developed agriculturally, however, consistent
with surrounding farms, the natural migration patterns of many species
would remain undisturbed.
The proposed gravel pit will adversely affect adjacent farming:
The noise of a gravel pit operation, even if confined to daylight hours, will
be a disaster for adjacent sheep and cattle operations. The noise of 82
decibel backup sirens on equipment (required by OSHA regulations) and
the operation of heavy diesel machinery will deter sheep and cattle from
watering at their natural watering source -the Dolores River.
In addition, farm studies have shown that heavy industry next to
agricultural operations tends to diminish the productivity of the sheep or
cattle and interfere with their natural reproductive cycles.
We ask the Department of Resources to take into account what obvious
effects these heavy industrial operations will have on the natural wildlife
in this area as well.
The proposed gravel pit will adversely affect air quality and violate
air quality standards: Exhibit G contains an EPA Map of Radon Zones
in the State of Colorado. Radon, uranium 235 and plutonium are known
to exist in relatively high levels throughout the state. These radioactive
and toxic carcinogens are known to exist in igneous rock, such as the
rock which is found in the Dolores River Valley.
Mining through this rock will disturb the radioactive particles and raise
radioactive radon which can, and will, precipitate in high concentrations
on any dust (no matter how the operation minimizes it). These
radioactive dust particles will settle into the soil during the entire length
of the proposed mining operation. They will adversely affect the eco-
system and all of the species (including humans) which are dependant
upon it.
This will be especially true of the air in the valley through which
migratory species must repeatedly pass, through which the river flows,
and through which tourists and residents of the valley must traverse.
Four States Aggregates, LLC 01 MAR 2001
Letter of Objection & Concern: Line Camp Pit FSA-LCP-D1-001
