Letter of Objection R Concern "Line Camp Gravel PiC' (Application N: M-2001)
Thursday, March 01, 2001 -Page: 10
There is no economic justification for the proposed gravel pit: There
are currently twenty-two gravel pits of this type operating in Montezuma
County. Each of them are operating at a level of production of about
140,000 tons of gravel per year.
However, according to County Commissioner Gene Story, Montezuma
County consumes only about 100,000 tons of gravel per year.
There is no economic justification for this gravel pit.
SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION
If the Department of Natural Resources balances the adverse impact of
this operation on adjacent agricultural land, the eco-tourism of the San
Juan Skyway, the natural resources and wildlife of the Dolores River
Valley, and, the potential for harm to residents downstream of the
operation, we hope the Department will see the need to protect the public
interest and deny the permit application.
The plan for reclamation in the application permit is not
appropriate because it does not adequately address the reclamation
• of the agricultural, residential, and natural resource damage that
the operation of this gravel pit will create in downstream and
adjacent areas.
Ve ruly Yours,
~-
J es E.
