Vi.r2inia
Gunnison, Colorado 81230
ke: Emergency Methane De-gas Drill Hole
Dear Ms. Williams:
The Sanborn Creek Mine is experiencing high levels of methane gas
in the eastern-most, underground working areas. One of the
abandoned, sealed panels is leaking methane through the seals,
causing potentially hazardous conditions.
We are requesting permission from Gunnison County to drill a 2,500-
foot deep, 6- to 8-inch diameter borehole from the surface above
the abandoned panel. Following completion of the borehole, a
vacuum pump would be installed on the collar of the hole to produce
a negative pressure in the abandoned panel, preventing methane from
leaking through the seal. Methane from the hole would be used to
power the vacu)nn pump.
The dri.ll.l)ole location would be at the end of the existing drill
road near the center of Section 1, T13S, R90W, shown on the
accompanying map. Access to the site would be from Highway 133 in
Section 10, along the public access road up Coal Gulch. Only minor
impruvements, as required to .get the drill rig to the site, would
be made to the existing roads. A small drill pad would be
constructed at the drill site. Exact location of the drill site
will be determined from survey information to locate the hole above
the underground mine entries.
I have already discussed with, and received verbal approval from,
Plr. David Berry, Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology, and Mr.
Alan Belt, Bureau of Land hlanagement. A Minor Revision for IiMG,
a.nd a notification letter for BLM will be prepared as soon as
possible. We intend to drill. the hole as soon as a drill rig can
be mobilized to the site.
Sincerely,
~u ~~~-
Thomas C.
