Following is a summary of events and conditions resulting
in the possible need to revise the Division's permit.
The domestic water supply for the mine and the Town of Somerset is
from an infiltration field in an alluvial terrace along the North
Fork of the Gunnison River. The water supply is documented in the
current permit on Drawing C8-1120, Page 2.04-4 and in the text on
Page 2.05-10.
During December 1987, an application was made and a permit was
issued by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for a modification to
the existing drop structures in place at that time. A single drop
structure across the south channel was added to the three existing
drop structures in the north channel. A copy of the permit was
sent to Ms, Susan Mowry of the Mined Land Reclamation Division on
January 4, 1988.
Since that time, the high flows, along with increased velocities
from construction of the realignment of Colorado State Highway 133,
have down cut the channels and removed most of the material in the
drop structures. The Sanborn Creek Mine has experienced difficulty
in receiving sufficient flow into the infiltration field, and we
are concerned with inadequate filtration of the domestic water
supply.
P O.
