•
Inventory & Eva • ion - Bear River Sand & Grave• 5-77
•
•

AREA ~{2
Soils and vegetative information found on proposed pit area:
A. Climate -- Precipitation averages 15 to 20 inches per year. Over
half occurs as snow. The frost free period is 50 to 90 days. The
site becomes somewhat droughty in early summer. Plant growth is
most favorable in May and June.
H. Elevation and Topography -- The proposed gravel pit occurs at an
elevation of about 6,500 feet. The natural slope is nearly
level. The area occurs on a river terrace, some 4 to 6 feet
above the surrounding bottomland.
C. Soils -- The proposed pit a curs on an unnamed mapping unit. The
soil is classed as a fluvaquent (49). Loam and sandy loam material
overlies sand and gravel at about an 18 - 24 inch depth. The soil
is moderately permeable but has a lox to fair waterholding capacity.
pH ranges from 6.6 to 7.3. Conductivity is negligible, (~2 mmhos~
cm, at 25° C).
D. Plant Community -- River Terrace-The dominant appearing aspect of
this site is scattered sagebrush and grasses. Ground cover is 20
percent. Total annual production is estimated at 900 lbs~acre,
(air dry weight). Droughty conditions through most of the growing
season limit production. This area appears to have been Irrigated
at some time in the past. The present vegetation is mostly native
plants.
Species occurring on the site are listed below.
Shrubs: Big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentate)
Grasses: Western xheatgrass
Kentuc}~y bluegrass
Redtop
Sedge
Slender wheatgrass
Timothy
Smooth bmme
Agropyron smithii)
Poe pratensis
Agrostia alba)
Carex sp.~-
Agropyron trachycaulum)
Phleum ratensis
Bromus inermis
Forbs: Alfalfa
Lupine
False lupine
Blue bells
Blue-eyed grass
Wooly mullein
Yarrow
Dandelion
Firexeed
Western coneflower
s~atav~ia)
6j~.
iuro
i6
