A datum consisting of a 3/8-inch
rebaz stake with a yellow plastic cap, which was stamped with the temporary site
number, was placed within each site.
Investigations in the Rio Blanco County courthouse and interviews with
local informants were conducted in order to determine the dates, names, and
significance of the historic sites found. The results of these investigations will be
presented with the site descriptions.
2.3 LABORATORY METIiODS
Subsequent to the cultural resource inventory, permanent site numbers
were obtained from OSAC and assigned to each of the seven sites, twelve localities
and six isolated finds recorded. The locations of each of these are illustrated on the
map in Appendix A. Completed OSAC site inventory forms and OSAC isolated find
• records may be seen in Appendix B.
Artifacts were washed, labelled and catalogued by permanent site,
locality or IF number. Copies of the artifact catalogue are contained is
Appendix C. Weaz patterns were examined with a lOX hand lens in an attempt to
determine specific artifact function. Flakes were analyzed for technique, stage of
manufacture, and material types. Artifacts diagnostic of site age were compazed to
those in published reports in order to determine site age and, where possible, the
cultural affiliation of the cultural location. The artifact typology was based on
morphological characteristics of the individual aztifacts. Functional interpretations
were based on the morphology of the utilized edge and the results of the Weaz
pattern analysis.
All field notes and negatives aze on permanent file at the offices of
Pioneer Archaeological Consultants. The artifacts and copies of the field notes will
be permanently stored at the Pioneers' Museum, 215 South Tejon Street, Colorado
. Springs, Colorado.
E-19
