eh
ESPEY, HUSTON &ASSOCIATES, INC.
•
vegetation were not inventoried. Figs. E-4 and E-5 show those areas which were
100 percent inventoried, those which were checked on game trails and those which
were not examined.
Surface cultural manifestations were sought in the forms of aztifactual
debris, structural remains or unnatural surface disturbance. Road cuts, azroyo
banks, anthills, and animal burrows were examined for evidence of subsurface
cultural remains. When cultural remains were observed, the azea surrounding the
original find was intensively seazched and additional materials were flagged with
surveyor's tape. All loci of cultural remains, with the exception of recent cultural
debris, were plotted on the appropriate USGS topographic quadrangle.
Three categories were used in the description of the cultural remains
found. Individual aboriginal items or isolated historic debris were recorded as
• isolated finds (IF). Two to five aboriginal items, concentrations of historic debris
with ao associated structures, historic to recent camps and aspen art were recorded
as localities. Sites were defined as six or more aboriginal aztifacts as well as any
structural remains unrelated to recent mining operations in the surveyed tract. The
latter category included a cluster of historic and currently utilized structures,
corrals and dumps. A collapsed historic structure, adjacent to the northern
boundary of the project azea, was briefly noted but not recorded in detail. It will be
briefly described with the other cultural remains.
Isolated finds and localities were recorded on OSAC isolated find record
forms. Sketch maps of each were drawn, and all diagnostic aztifacts were collected.
Notes were taken by each of the crew members and several of the localities were
photographed. Sites were recorded on OSAC Site Inventory forms. Each site was
mapped using a Brunton Pocket Transit mounted on a tripod and paced distances.
Sketch maps were completed in the field and later revised in the lab. Artifacts
diagnostic of site age or function were provided with provenience measurements and
collected for laboratory analysis. Supplementary notes were taken on each site by

E-18
