e
ESPEY, HUSTON &ASSOCIATES, INC.
•

The azeas to be inventoried were cleazly delineated on enlazgemeats of
the Rattlesnake Mesa, Colorado and the Ninemile Gap, Colorado 7.5' USGS
quadrangles by Northern Coal Company. The seismic line was mazked with pin
flags, the hydrology and drill hole locations were mazked with lath stakes, and the
proposed access road was clearly flagged with surveyor's tape.
A 100 percent (BLM Class III) cultural resource inventory was conducted
in most of the study azea. Those azeas which were not 100 percent inventoried aze
described below sad on the maps in Figs. E-4 and E-5. The field procedures varied
depending on the type of inventory being done (drill hole, seismic line, block, etc.),
the topography and the density of the vegetation. One to four persons were on the
field crew.
The seismic line and the proposed access road were walked in a zigzag
. pattern to 30 meters and 15 meters, respectively, on either side of the flagged
centerline. The drill hole locations were walked in 3-meter pazallel transects in a
squaze measuring 60 meters on a side and centered on the lath stake. Existing roads
were usually surveyed using a single zigzagging transect, although on occasion,
several pazallel traasects were used.
All azeas with flat or gently sloping grades and azeas without dense
vegetation were inventoried using pazallel transects between 20 and 50 meters in
width. Areas with dense vegetation prohibited the use of pazallel transects in
several portions of the project azea. Areas with gentle to moderate slopes in
conjunction with dense vegetation were surveyed on game trails. Cleazings were
surveyed in zigzagging transects. These circumstances were chazacteristic of the
majority of ridgetops and forested drainages. In several cases, existing roads
followed densely vegetated ridge crests sad provided access to cleazings and game
trails. Those portions of the ridge slopes with a slope of less than 20° to 25° and
which were transected by game trails were surveyed in single, meandering tranaects.
No slopes in excess of 30° were surveyed. Several azeas of extremely dense
•
E-15
