e
ESPEY, HUSTON 8 ASSOCIATES, INC.

the southeastern portion of the project azea. Several intermittent tributazies to
Curtis Creek drain north and west through the study azea.
The study azea itself is chazacterized by a series of north-trending ridges
sepazated by a network of nazrow valleys. These ridges have moderate to very steep
slopes. Sandstone cliffs aze present on some of the south and west-facing slopes.
Minimum elevation of the project azea is 6,840 feet in the southwestern portion of
the project azea, and maximum elevation is 8,300 feet.
Ground visibility within the study area vazied from negligible to good.
Zones obscured by thick mazsh grasses, dense aspen grove understory, and par
ticulazly by concentrations of oak brush, serviceberry, chokecherry, and snowberry
exhibited 0 percent visibility. Maximum visibility, estimated at 70 percent, was
available on the summits of the highest ridges. The majority of the project azea,
• chazacterized by dense scrub vegetation, exhibited 0 percent to 30 percent visi-
bility; the only azeas in which the ground could be seen consisted of game trails,
rodent burrows, roads and drill hole pads. The lower slopes and open sage azeas
averaged 40 percent to 60 percent ground visibility.
1.3 LITERATURE REVIEW
13.1 Aboriginal Background
Although data pertinent to the prehistory of the Danforth Hills region
and the Curtis Creek drainage aze relatively scazce, the prehistoric sequence may
pazallel that of the northwestern Plains and the eastern Great Basin. The eazliest
evidence of human occupation in the region consists of Paleo-Indian remains. The
Paleo-Indian tradition, which dates between 10200 B.C. and 5000 B.C. on the basis
of present evidence, is chazacterized by lazge, lanceolate projectile points. Paleo-
Indiaas were dependent upon a hunting and gathering economy with an emphasis on
the procurement of large game animals.
