Ba. 67B
Nucla, Colorado 81 a74 RE; FOR THE RECORD. 1.36 INCH RAINFALL EVENT AT NEW HORIZON MINE,
PERMIT NO. C-81-008.
telephone 97018h4-1165
fu 910186-7168 Dear Mr. Ranney:
I am happy to report that the New Horizon Mine ias withstood a 1.36 inch,
area wide, rainfall event with flying colors. Elden though the 1.36 inch
was not a l0yr-24hr event, it was a good test on the ditches and ponds
that are presently in place. The rain started on October 2, 1996 at
approximately 6:30pm and finished cn October 3, 1996 at approximately
11:OOam, see Attachment 1. Rainfall records were gathered by our
electronic weather station at the New Horizon Mine Office. Actual
duratiorl of the storm was 10.50 hours and the rain was slow arrd steady.
NEW HORIZON 2 AREA
I went out several times on the 3rd and observed Pond 007 and the
surrounding mine permit area. I did not see any water runoff from the
revegetated reclaimed land. 007 East Ditch was flowing near clear water
at about 4 inches of depth into Pond 007. I observed the pit pump pumping
near clear water into Pond 007 during the stoxml. I would like to add that
if the pit water was not clear, the pit pump would not have been running.
I did not test the water quality of these two inflows however. The runoff
__ ..:~ _ -es~ - .~ _,.-.~~ la;~. tira~ ,iaa nu veyeta~ion growtn was
muddy. The muddy water was observed flowing toward the open pit, where it
was stored and out of harms way. During the storm, I turned the 25 HP
submersible pump in Pond U07 on t.o Calamity Draw. Tnis occured at Noon
of the 3rd, near the peak o£ the nlnoEf Elow. A water sample from the
pond dischaxcJe was taken and analyzed. The results passed all NPDES
parameters very well, thank you. Results can be seen in AttacYunenC. 2.
(G \DATA\WPDATA \REVISION\HARRY27.COC) 1 Of 2
