This soil has a paralithic contact rather than a lithic contact as •
allowed in the Vandamore series, dnd 15 therefore mapped dS a.variant.
The Vandamore is not recommended for lift 1 material. It is suitable
for lift 2, but is rated marginal due to flagstones from the surface
to bedrock at 20 to 40 inches. There are areas of this soil that will
be too stoney for salvage.
This series occurs in map units CVB, CVD, and VWD. It was
sampled in typical pedon number 1 and in composite sample numbers
91/'239 and 141/132. Average lift 1 thickness is U inches, average
lift 2 thickness is 24 inches, for an average total salvagable
thickness for the series of 'L4 inches.
2.1.17 Waybe cobbly Clay Loam
This soil is a shallow, well drained, slowly to moderately
permeable soil formed in residuum derived from clayey, calcareous
shale.. It occurs on ridyecrests and breaks in mountain sideslopes on
slopes of 5 to 45 percent. The native veyeta.tion is sparse grasses,
forbs and biy sage. The available water holding capacity is low.
In a typical profile, the surface layer is dark grayish brown to
yellowish brown, cobbly clay loam to clay or silty clay loam about 7
inches thick. The substratum is yellowish brown, channery to cobbly
j clay loam to clay about 8 inches thick. Depth to bedrock is less than •
20 inches. The Series is within the clayey, mixed (calcareous),
shallow fiamily of Typic Cryorthents.
Average depth to bedrock is 13 inches. The Waybe is not
recommended for salvage due to the large percent (6Uk) of flagstones
on the surface.
This series occurs in map unit VWD. It was sampled in typical
pedon number 2 and in composite sample numbers 122/142 and 134/117.
The average total salvayable thickness for the series is U inches.
2.1.18 Waybe Var. channery Clay Loam
This soil is a shallow, well drained, slowly to moderately
permeable soil formed in residuum derived from baked, clayey,
calcareous shale. It occurs on red knobs and mountain sideslopes on
slopes of 8 to 55 percent. The native vegetation is forbs, grasses
and mountain shrubs. The ava ilable water holding capacity is low.
In a typical profile, the surface layer is reddish brown, very
channery clay loam or sandy clay loam about 3 inches thick. 'The
substratum is reddish brown, gravelly clay loam to sandy clay about 15
inches thick. Depth to bedrock is 3 to 11 inches.. The series is
within the clayey, mixed (calcareous), shallow family of Typic
Cryorthents.
H channery lay covers 75 percent of the surface. Tne profile is •
calcareous throughout. This soil is redder than allowea for the Waybe
series, and is therefore mapped as a variant. The Waybe variant is
16
