ABSTRACT
Results of past acute bioassays indicate that effluent discharged from outfal] 001 is acutely toxic
to Ceriodaphnia dubia. The Bear Coal Company discharge permit states that the facility must
conduct either a Preliminary Toxicity Identification evaluation (PTI) or a Toxicity Identification
Evaluation (TIE) once a "pattern of toxicity" has been established. Commercial Testing and
Engineering, Co. (CT&E) opted, with permission by Bear Coal Co., to wnduct an acute
Preliminary Toxicity Identification (PTI) on effluent dischazged by Bear Coal Company. The
purpose of this PTI was to determine the possible cause(s) of the acute toxicity to Ceriodaphnia
dubia. The test organisms utilized were the cladocerans Ceriodaphnia dubia and Daphnia
magna. The results were not conclusive. The evidence, however, strongly suggests that toxicity
may be due to total dissolved solids (TDS). Further testing maybe necessary.
