This monitoring
event is in fulfillment of a requirement for annual, compliance water monitoring near the Gold Hill Mill, as
requiredbytheColoradoDivisionofMineralsandGeology. Water samplingactivitieswereconductedatthe
Site by MFG personnel on July 25, 2000. One groundwater sample was collected from monitoring well, Well
#1, and a water sample was taken from inside the Hazel A adi[. Monitoring activities were performed in
accordance with MFG Standard Operating Procedures (SOPS), adapted as necessary to accommodate as-
encounteredfieldconditions. Detailsofthesamplingproceduresandthetabulatedfielddataarepresented
below.
Prior to sampling Well #1, an initial water level was measured to the nearest0.01 foot from the top
of the well casing (TOC) using a Solinst electronic water level meter. The water level probe was
decontaminated prior to use, using anon-phosphate detergent and distilled water solution, and rinsing twice
with distilled water. After measuring the water level, the well was sampled by lowering a dedicated
polyethylene bailer, suspended by nylon rope, into the well. Due to the large casing diameter (6 inches), the
depth of water in the well (in excess of 15 feet), and the slow recharge rate to the well, the standard practice
of purging three casing volumes of waterprior to sampling was omitted. Three bailer volumes (approximately
3 liters) were removed from the well to ensure adequate sample volume. The sample from the Hazel A adit
was collected directly from a ponded area of water, approximately 15 feet inside the adit portal. At the time
of sampling, water in the adit was flowing over the bulkhead and collectingbehind asand-bag dam. Water
was not flowing outside the adit portal. Water samples were collected in a temporary container that had been
cleaned with a dilute nitric acid solution and rinsed with water from the sample collection location. Sample
aliquots were pumped from the temporary collection container into appropriate laboratory-supplied containers
using a peristaltic pump and silicon tubing. All of the samples were field filtered for dissolved analyses by
pumping the sample aliquots through a O.45µ in-line disposable filter. The filter was purged with
1:5461 W NN2000.LTR.wpd
~~
m,rea ~,
California Colorado Idaho Massachusetts • Montana New Jersey • New Mexico Pennsylvania • Texas • Washington Po,,,
