Sites where roughening by the above-mentioned methods is not practical (e.g., steep
slopes, rocky areas, etc.) will be dozer-tracked perpendicular to the slope or otherwise
left with adequate roughness following topsoil placement to provide microsites for seed
germination and to reduce soil movement.
2.4 Fertilization
It will not be necessary to apply fertilizers or lime to reclaimed sites because the
majority of the topsoil will have been stockpiled for only a short time. Furthermore,
fertilization may enhance weed growth. Fertilizer will only be used if recommended by
the BLM or other landowner.
2.5 Revegetation
The following seed mixtures, seeding rates, and seeding methods have been developed
in consultation with the White River Resource Area BLM.
2.5.1 Species Selection
Selection of plant species for revegetation is primarily based on native plant community
composition and existing soil types. Individual species' establishment potential, growth
characteristics, soil stabilizing qualities, palatability to wildlife and livestock, and
commercial availability are also considered, as well as post-construction land use
objectives and agency recommendations.
Certified, weed-free seed will be used whenever possible, and, in all cases, seed will be
free of primary noxious weeds. Seed labels from each bag will be available for
inspection while seeding is in progress.
2.5.2 Revegetation Mixtures and Rates
The basic seed mixture and seeding rate presented in Table 1 are based on recent BLM
recommendations and similar projects on parallel pipeline corridors. Seeding rates are
presented in pounds of pure live seed (PLS) per acre based on application rates for drill
seeding. Broadcast or hydroseeding rates (if used) will be roughly twice the drilling
rates.
The seed mixture and seeding rate presented in Table 2 apply to private land in the
Parachute Creek valley owned by Unocal (Bio-Resources 1995). These seeding
specifications are assumed to be appropriate for the Yankee Gulch Project pipeline but
could be adjusted based on future negotiations with Unocal.
In accordance with the Colorado Division of Wildlife's request, forb species known to
be beneficial to sage grouse will be included in the revegetation seed mixture to
enhance sage grouse habitat. This will apply to appropriate sage grouse habitats along
Barnes Ridge. Forb species to be added will include dryland alfalfa (Medicago sativa),
small burnet (Sanguisorba minor), and sainfoin (Onobrychis viciaefolia).
Pipeline Nedamaton Plan
Yankee GWch Salium hlirerals Pmlen
Amencan Soda.
