L~

June 20, 1988
Ms. Sandi Squire
Water Quality Control bivision
Monitoring and Enforcement Section
Colorado Dept. of Health
4210 East 11th Ave.
Denver, CO 80220
Dear Sandi:
Subject: Colorado Uastewater Discharge Permit CO-0032115
As reported to you by phone by our Mr. Bill Harding on June 17, 1988, Trapper
Mine measured a pH value which exceeds our permitted discharge value. The
elevated pH is at Johnson Gulch discharge point 001.
The source of the discharge is from groundwater and is not related to any
ground or surface water runoff passing through backfilled mining areas.
Trapper Mine is experiencing a very dry period. Natural groundwater flows
into our lower sediment control ponds are very low. As a result of the low
flows and high summertime temperatures, a significant growth of algae has
developed in several of the Johnson Gulch sediment control ponds. It is not
possible to prevent discharge since the present discharge from the system is
due to groundwater. We have installed a carbon dioxide bubbler to lower the
pH of 001 from 9.7 to 9.0 or less. However, we are only able to hold the pH
at around 9.5 pH and can't get below 9.0 pH.
We will continue with the pzesent course of treatment unless instructed by the
Division to use some other approved and agreed-to technique.
Please call if you have any questions.
Best regards,
~~~
H.
