T-
UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
SOIL CONSERVATION SERVICE 6th & Albert Streets, Walsenburg, Colorado 81089
July 16, 1991
Charles Bud Keeling
P.O. Box 361
La Veta, Colorado 81655
Dear Bud:
On July 15, 1991 I field reviewed your small existing gravel pit that you plan
to enlarge. My reasons for looking at the site with you and your son was to
make recommendations on a reclamation plan. In field reviewing the site I
inventoried the following: _
SOIL — 92 - WILLOWMAN gravelly sandy loam, 3 to 8 percent slopes.
Willowman is a somewhat excessively drained soil on old
terraces. Typically they have a thin gravelly loam surface
layer, gravelly clay loam subsoil, and very gravelly loamy
sand substratum that are high in lime, it takes water well,
has moderate water holding capacity and has moderate to
rapid permeability. Erosion hazard is slight to moderate.
Use is dominantly grazing. This is a good source area for
gravel.
VEGETATION - This area is an old dryland wheat field that was seeded to
smooth brome grass several years ago. Today the vegetation
consists of brome, Western wheatgrass, yellow sweetclover,
broom snakeweed and various other weeds.
WATER RESOURCES- In my opinion, this high, dry, gravelly site will not affect
water resources.
RECLAMATION PLAN
1. Final Grading - No slopes should be left greater than 4:1 with most of the
site being restored to about a 2% slope. A diversion ditch should be
constructed above or West of the site to eliminate the hazard any runoff
water originating, above or west of the site causing erosion or drowning
out the new seeding.
2. Topsoiling - When the pit is enlarged the top 6 to 12 inches of sandy loam
topsoil will be stockpiled to be used to topsoil the surface of the
disturbed area prior to seeding. Any fine textured materials encountered
during pit operation below the 1 foot depth will be stockpiled separately
and used to blanket the disturbed area prior to replacing the topsoil.
This procedure will result in a minimum 6 inch blanket of soil material
over the disturbed area. With fertilizer, mulch, and grazing deferment
a satisfactory stand of grass should be established on this site,
(continued) O
