Therefore, please show the staff from what areas topsoil <br />will be removed, where it will be stockpiled on each map, what seed mix <br />will be seeded for topsoil stabilization, and the calculated volumes of <br />topsoil that will be available on each pit. For revegetatlon. If you do <br />not intend to salvage topsoil, then you must address 1n detail how you <br />will reconstruct a plant growth medium from the material that is left in <br />the pit. This plan will include, but not be limited to, ground <br />preparation, organir.lnputs, mulches, fertilizer and the limitations of <br />the existing medium for plant growth. The staff can not stress enough <br />the need for salvaging topsoil for revegetatlon purposes, given the <br />revegetatlon failures on eastern Colorado pits that did not salvage <br />topsoil. Therefore, any plan to revegetate a gravel pit without topsoil <br />and proper plant growth inputs will be evaluated very closely to <br />determine if the applicant can be expected to have any success. <br />Exhibit E - Reclamation Plan <br />In addltton to the sDeclftc problems pointed out under Exhlblt D, there <br />are a feu specific problems or questions on the following plans. <br />In addltton to the topsoil problem an drainage problem on the Murdock Pit Ole <br />(No. 83-112), staff has observed an abandoned road grader on this pit and <br />wishes to know if you will dispose of this equipment as part of your <br />plan. Also, some of the pit walls area above 20-30 feet and are 1n close <br />proximity to adJacent fields. The staff would like to know how you will <br />reduce these slopes to 3:1 without taking out adJacent wheat fields or <br />en larging your permit area. <br />The staff must have a seed mix to evaluate on the Blackwell Pit (No. <br />83-115) and the Gentt Ptt (No. 83-116). Therefore, please supply us with <br />one on each pit. <br />The Division of Wildlife has expressed concern For the quail and pheasant <br />populations that frequent the area around the Chlvington Ptt (No. 83-119) <br />and has made suggestions 1n their letter for tare planning of vegetation <br />species that enhance their fiabltat. Therefore, please let the staff know <br />tf you will incorporate these species in your reclamation plan. <br />
