FIGURE 16-2
United States Department of the Interior
FISH aYD WILDLIFE SERVICE
COLORADO FIELD OFFICE
J30 S. GARRISON ST.
4AAEWOOD, COLORADO 90226
N REPLY REFER TO:
Mr. Henry Barb
Environmental Specialist
Powderhorn Coal Company
P.O. Box 1430
Palisade, Colorado 81526
June 14, 1982
Re: htodification of powerpoles on the Powderhorn Coal Company lands,
to eliminate possible raptor electrocution problems
Oear Mr. Barb:
i. On 10 June 1982 an inspection of 30 powerpoles was made on the Powderhorn
• Coal Company property. These poles ran approximately north/south and were
located on an area that is frequented by various species of raptors. The poles
represent the only perch sites avaiiabie to raptors for approximately 0.5-i.0
miles.
2. Participants on this inspection included Henry Barb, Environmental Specialist,
Powderhorn Coal Company, Tom Lytle, Non-game Biologist, Colorado Division of
Wildlife and myself.
3. After a visual inspection, the following recommendations were made to
prevent the electrocution of raptors perching on these powerpoles.
A fiberglass or wooden triangle, designed according to specifications
found in the Raptor Research Bulletin entitled, "Suggested Practices
for Raptor Protection on Power Lines, The State of the Art 1981", should
be placed between the two powerlines attached to one side of the cross arrr
b. The poles that have a ground wire running from the top static line to
the ground, should be periodically inspected for electrocuted raptors.
If birds are found under these structures, modifications will have
to be made to the ground wires.
Sincerely,
~~ ~ ~ ~
.
