ABSTRACT At the request of Somerset Mining Company, Commercial
Testing and Engineering performed effluent and spring water
characterization tests on samples take from Somerset Mine. The
following characterization tests were performed: C. dubia acute
toxicity tests on mine effluent and B-seam spring water, C. dubia
acute toxicity tests on mock effluent and mock B-seam spring water,
EDTA chelation tests on effluent, spring water and a mock effluent
sample. In addition, the effluent was scanned for metals using
Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) and atomic absorption.
The above characterization tests were chosen based on past test
results from Phase I Toxicity Identification Evaluations (TIE's)
that strongly suggested toxicity due to high total dissolved solids
(TDS), possibly in solution with bicarbonates. Therefore, Sodium,
in the form of NaCI and NaHCOj, was added to individual aliquots of
reconstituted lab water to mimic TDS of the effluent and the B-seam
spring water. LCSp's for the mock effluent and mock spring water
prepared with NaHCOj were higher than those determined for mock NaCl
and unmanipulated effluent and spring water samples. However,
effluent and spring water mortalities were greater than the
mortalities of mock samples prepared with sodium chloride. This
suggests that the toxicant currently present in Somerset Mine
effluent and spring water is more likely to be TDS in the form of
bicarbonates.
COM MER CIAL TESTING & ENGINEE RING CO.
=66 ~~G
ip final Walerm arketl For Vour Proiecuon
