• 9) The impact of site development and reclamation on the hydro-
logic balance for both ground and surface waters will be nil. There
are no surface waters in the portal and surface plant areas. The
relativch~ small amounts of water needed for reclamation and for
site development can be supplied from private sources and trucked
to the affected areas when needed.
The impact of underground mining operations will be minimal,
for only the coal seams will be extracted in the mining operation.
Although they may carry some water, the amounts will be relatively
small if other coal mining operations are a guide. Of the mines
which have operated in the Hesperus-Durango area, only one has
reported significant amounts of water and this was the result of a
• geologic freak of underground impoundment.
Water wells in Section 22, 27, 33 and 34 will be unaffected by
mining activities of Applicant. As mentioned in paragraph 9, the
ground waters flowing through the Menefee are diverted into and
along the trough of the Perine Peak Syncline and contribute little to
the ground waters along the crest or on the southeast limb of the
Durango Anticline. In the southern part of the coal lands near the
trough of the syncline, the lower strata of the Menefee may be more
highly saturated. Unfortunately, the coal seams in this part of the
property are too thin to mine, hence regardless of ground water
state, no impact will result from the mining operations, Based on

-29-
