~~ <br /> <br />Mulch Requirements ~ \` <br />1. Material will be native hay or cereal grain straw. <br />(In this Standard and Specification, both are referred <br />to as straw.) <br />2. Straw shall not be musty, moldy, decayed, caked or of <br />otherwise low quality. Straw shall be free of weeds and <br />viable seeds. <br />3. At least 50% of the straw, by weight, shall be 10 inches or <br />more in length. <br />Time of Application <br />When straw mulch is scheduled for use, its application should <br />normally be the final operation; i.e. mulching should follow <br />fertilizing and seeding. However, seeding should be the final <br />operation on loose sands, particularly when the mechanical method <br />is used to anchor the mulch, <br />Rate of Application <br />1. The normal rate of application shall be approximately 4,000 <br />lbs/A of air dry straw. <br />2. If the straw is to be anchored by crimping, the rate of application <br />shall be approximately 5,000 lbs/A of air dry straw. <br />Mulch Anchoring t4ethods~ <br />One of the following :methods will be applied immediately to hold <br />mulch in place: <br />1. tlanufactured mulch Wettings such as those made from paper or <br />plastic. (It may be desirable to use wire fencing, snow <br />fence or similar materials for small areas.) <br />2. Asphalt. <br />3. t^echanical. (Crimper) <br />Page 2 of 4 <br />~_ <br />
