STATE OF COLORADO
• Roy Romer, Governor
DEPARTMENT OF NATURALRESOURCES
DIVISION OF WILDLIFE
PF/ CgOAL OPPOR RINITY EMMOYFA
Perry D Olson, Dneclor
6060 Broadway
Denver, Colorado 00216
Tclephono: (300) 297-1192
151 E. 16th St.
Durango, Colorado
81301
Uarry A. To our knowledge there are no T & E species occuring on the
mine property. Bald Eagles are found on the Animas River, within
one mile of the property, during the winter months. The mine
property does not provide any nesting site that we know of, nor any
winter roosting trees. Lependin,g upon the route of the haul trucks
• and frequency of trips l doubt that the birds would be disturbed,
as this stretch of the Animas R. has two major highways paralle.iing
both sides.
The one comment I would like to address is the continued support of
the Company toward the reclamation of the property. The entire
area surrounding Lurango provides critical winter habitat for both
deer and ell;. Reclamation should provide native browse species as
well as treed cover for these two primary species of concern. Deer
numbers are dwindling in the area, we believe, due to the loss of
habitat and the competition with increasing elk numbers.
If I can be of further help, please call 3G3-2=17-0865.
S~l'
{N-~ ~Llje~ t/~
Ruth Lewis Carlson
Habitat, Biologist
cc:Hendicks
KNisely
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Kenneth Salazar, Ezeanive Director
WILDLIFE COMMISSION, George VanDenBarg, Chairmen ~ William R.
