• Site-Specific Geology
The A Coal Seam roof consists of 10 to 12 feet of shale and sandstone.
In general, the roof material is reasonably competent, but is subject to
some deterioration when exposed to the cycles of moisture attendant with
mine ventilation.
The floor of the A Coal Seam is characterized by 5 to 12 feet of
interbedded sandstones and shales. The floor is sufficiently competent
for the operation of mining equipment.
The overburden above the A Coal Seam varies from a few feet near the
north and south edge of the mining area to over 200 feet in areas near
the central portion of the permit area.
Coal Quality
• The coal seam to be mined at the Peacock Coal Mine will be the A Coal
Seam; the quality of the A Coal Seam appears to be quite uniform
throughout the area. Typical analysis of the A Coal Seam on an
as-received basis is as follows:
Btu/lb 13,426
Moisture (%) 4.01
Ash (%) 5.37
Sulfur (°,6) 0.54
Location of Subsurface Water
No water is present in the abandoned or current workings of the Peacock
Coal Mine. Because the existing workings dip to the south, any water
encountered in the mine should drain to the old portal. However, no
water has been encountered draining from the old or existing workings.
All of the data obtained to date by Sunbelt for the Peacock Coal Mine

2.04-12
