September 15, 1980
NORTHERN N0. I MINE - IdATER SYSTEM
Description
Potable water would be collected from the french drain system by a spring
box.
This box is a perforated concrete pipe set on end in a bed of gravel.
The water collected would be piped to a diversion box by a 4-inch PVC line.
At the diversion box, a portion of the water will be diverted to a frost-
proof box where a pump could be used to pump water to the water storage
tank above the Northern No. 1 portals. A 2-inch PVC gravity line would be
used to provide water to the Northern No. 1 bathhouse water tank.
Any water not diverted would flow, via 4-inch pipe, into a spring box at
the french drain from the portals area. A 4-inch PVC line would drain this
water into the small stock pond directly below the sediment dam.
Installation of the pump and line to the water tank above the portals is
not part of the work contemplated at this time,
Given the slope of the lines, the 4-inch pipe could handle up to 210 GPM
and the 2-inch pipe would handle 30 GPM. No pimping would be required.
All boxes would be equipped with man hole covers to allow access for
cleaning.
A water quality monitoring program of monthly samples for a full suite o£
parameters has been started. NCC will continue the monitoring indefinitely,
since once water rights have been acquired, the water will be used at the
bathhouse and monitoring is required. Analyses obtained to date are
attached. The analyses indicate the water is potable with no treatment,
If infiltration of surface runoff contaminates the french drain water,
appropriate treatment will ensue to the potable supply and the residual
french drain water will be diverted to the sediment pond until the polluting
condition is eliminated. This action is also required under the spill
prevention and containment plan of the NPDES Permit.
...,~ ~
Y 1. ~[
