medium. Short term revegetation potential is medium and long term ie
high. Potential biomass production is rated medium. Fair cover is
provided for game birds, small non-game birds and small mammals. Elk,
game birds, small non-game birds and small mammals obtain fair food
value from thickspike wheatgrass. Forage palatability for cattle ie
good and sheep is fair. Energy and protein value retention are fair.
TIMOTHY: PHLEUM PRATENSE L.
Timothy is a European introduction that grows from 4,500 to 11,500
•
feet in Colorado in moist sites. It reproduces sexually and in terms of
weediness ie classified as a colonizer. This species isn't poisonous.
Growth potential goes from good to poor as slopes increase from gentle
to steep. This grass has a medium rating for erosion control potential.
Establishment requirements are also medium. It is highly rated for its
short term revegetation potential. The long term revegetation potential
of this plant is medium. Potential biomass production is classified as
medium. Fair cover is produced for deer and game birds. Good cover for
small mammals and non-game birds is produced. Good food value is
obtained by small non-game birds and the other four categories of
wildlife procure fair food values from timothy. Cattle and sheep forage
palatability are both rated good
are fair and poor, respectively.
Energy and protein retention values
Heavy utilization of timothy by wildlife and domestic livestock
u
make it a valuable and desirable species for revegetation at the Edna
Mine. This species helps establish a quick vegetative cover for erosion
control that will be gradually replaced over time by native grass
species. Timothy isn't poisonous or noxious and is compatible with the
plant and animal species present in the region.
Mid-term '94
4.4-A-19
September 15,1994
