• this grnse as medium. However, long term revegetation potential is high.
Biomass production is rated medium. Game birds, small non-game birds and
small mammals find fair cover in this grass. Food value for all five
classes of wildlife is fair. Forage palatability for cattle ie good and
sheep fair. Energy value is fair and protein poor.
TALL FESCUE: FESTUCA ARUNDINACEA (SCREB.) CELAK.
This is a European introduction. Tall fescue prefers moist Bites
from 4,800 to 8,700 feet in Colorado. Reproduction is accomplished
sexually and vegetatively. The P.I.N. data bank classifies it ae an
economic weed. Tall fescue is a minor poisoner of livestock. (See hard
fescue for poisonous factor).
• Growth in sandy loam, loam and clay loam on gentle slopes is good.
Poor growth is obtained on moderate to steep slopes. Erosion control for
this fescue is potentially high. Establishment requirements are low and the
short and long term revegetation potentials are medium and high
respectively. Potential biomass production is high. Forage palatability
for cattle is good and for sheep fair. Energy retention values are fair
and protein poor.
THICKSPIKE WHEATGRASS: AGROPYRON DASYSTACHUM (HOOK.) SCRIBN.
This wheatgrass is a native, non-weedy perennial that prefers dry
habitats and ranges from 4,800 to 10,000 feet in Colorado. Reproduction
occurs sexually and vegetatively by rhizomes. Growth of thickspike on
sandy loam and loam is good and on clay loam is fair. This species
• exhibits the best growth on gentle and moderate slopes. The erosion
control potential is high. Establishment requiremens for this plant are
Mid-term '94 4.4-A-18 September 15,1994
