~ `
Pope Gravel Pit 2 ,.
These species were selected because they are recommended in MLRA 48A accord-
ing to SCS Critical Area Specification No. 342 and they.will meet the
owners needs as apost-mining land use. The reclaimed land will be in con-
formity with surrounding land as a forest/hay meadow vegetative type.
S. Seeding should be done using a-grass drill. The drill should be equipped
with a satisfactory seeding mechanism, agitator, double disk furrow openers,
depth bands, and packer wheels or drag chains. The distance between drill rows
should not exceed 12 inches. Broadcasting the seed can be done in areas
which are inaccessible for drilling. IE the seed is broadcasted, then the
above seeding rates should be doubled. The broadcasted seeds should be uni-
formly distributed over the ground surface, and mixed into the soil with a
harrow or by hand raking. Planting can be done anytime between November 1
and May 31. Seeding should not be done when the soil is Frozen. The seeds
should be planted between 1/4 and 3/4 inch deep:
6. Mulch should be applied to the reseeded area to help moderate soil
temperatures, improve soil moisture absorption and holding capacity. Grass
hay or cereal grain straw free of weed seeds is recommended. Apply 4000
pounds of mulch/acre to the soil surface. At least half of the material
should be 10 inches or more in length. Do not use fine materials. The
mulch should be anchored either with commercial netting products (on slopes
steeper than 3:L) or mechanically. The latter can be accomplished using a
heavy disk implement, with dull blades, to punch the mulch into the soil
2 to 3 inches deep. Crimping should not sever the mulch. Mulching should
not be done when wind velocities exceed 15 miles per hour.
7. All tillage, seeding and crimping operations should be performed across
the slope when practical.
8. The area should be protected from grazing and trampling until seeding is
well established. Normally two years of protection is needed.
1
~,~'.~
y
