The post-mining land use.will be pasture
and hayland. There is no prime farmland that will be mined. There will be
no gro undwater intercepted during mining. The owner/operator will be responsi-
ble for reclamation.
The area has been previously mined for several decades. Approximately three
acres has been disturbed. The general aspect is forested land dotted with
open areas of introduced-grass hay meadows. The owner has been gradually
mining a "dome" of decomposed granite. The attached vegetative inventory
was taken from the edges of the mined area and undisturbed areas next to the
mined area. The limited topsoil has been stockpiled. For additional mining
that takes place the top soil will be stockpiled.
1. Prior to spreading the topsoil, the area should be banks loped so that no
slope will exceed a 3:1 slope. Rough areas should be smoothed to permit
easier seeding and mulching. The area should be scarified to a depth of 6
inches to permit better bonding between the topsoil and the underlying soil
material. After scarification, the topsoil will be uniformly spread over
the area. "`~
2. A soil test should be performed to determine the proper fertilizer require-
ment. In lieu of a soil test, fertilize the entire gravel pit with 40
pounds per acre each of available elemental nitrogen (N) and phosphoric acid
(P 205). The fertilizer must be incorporated into the top 2 to 3 inches of
soil using a disk or harrow implement. Fertilizer should be applied immediately
prior to seeding, or at the time of seeding.
3. Soils that have been overcompacted by traffic or equipment should be tilled
to break up rooting restrictive layers, harrowed and then rolled or packed to
prepare the required firm seedbed. The seedbed should be well settled and
firm, but friable enough that seed can be placed at the recommended seeding
depth. The ideal firmness is when a one-halt inch boot print is left after
walking across the soil surface.
\4.
